The Four Mahavakyas - Purpose of Life!
Hindu scriptures have always been occult and mysterious due to their deep knowledge of life, mysticism and philosophy. There are many hindu scriptures often reffered as ज्ञान गँगा because knowledge in them is as abundant and as holy as river ganga! One of many dissections of that infinite knowledge is the knowledge of Vedas.
Vedas are holy scriptures of the ancient Vedic Age ( 600 BCE ) containing thousands of chants or mantras compiled together by 'Vyasa' or famously called Veda Vyasa'.
There are four vedas. They are Rigveda, Samveda, Atharvaveda and Yajurveda. There are total 108 Upanishads (Philosophy texts) in the four vedas divided.
Okay..after all math, we can say No Human today has time to read and digest all the knowledge of the four vedas! But there is a conclusion of all four vedas compiled and summarized into just four sentences! Of course you cannot be a god by just grasping those four sentences known as four mahavakyas but if you want a simple conclusion to all that scripts, you must know the four mahavakyas!
All four sentences are taken as a conclusion concept of all four vedas. With their meaning with a story, following are the sentences:
One day a teacher was teaching their disciples about life and it's core purpose. The disciples asked, " What exactly is everything? Why creation is all around me? Why it is so varied and lively?"
The teacher said, " Everything around you all is pure energy, pure consciousness. It is all varied but fundamentally all creation is united. Its like different colour papers. They are different, but when burnt, every colour paper ends up being ashes! Thus, everything around you is energy's illusion which we call creation." He then called the creation 'Bramha' which means physical creation of energy. He said प्रज्ञानां ब्रम्हा।।
'प्र' - surrounding ( outsideous )
'ज्ञानं' - Knowledge is
'ब्रम्हा' - pure energy. (All same)
Then the disciples asked that they now know what is around them. But then they asked who are they?
The teacher replied, " तत त्वं असि " which means 'that is you'.
The disciples questioned, " What part of me? My hands? Brain? The heart? What is that?"
The teacher said, " अयं आतमां ब्रम्हा " or " You " ( The soul ) too is pure energy.
That ultimately means that our own body is not ours. It too is प्रज्ञान ( Outer knowledge) and the real you is our own soul.
Then the teacher further concluded, " अहम् ब्रम्हास्मि " or ' I am bramha, the pure energy ( which is misunderstood as body ).
Thus, we conclude that those four vedas teach us to know ourselves!
1. Everything is Energy
- Etarey upanishad of Rigveda.
2. That is you
- Chandogya upanishad of Samveda.
3. Soul is pure energy
- Mandukya upanishad of Atharvaveda
4. I am pure energy
- Dandakaaranya upanishad of Yajurveda
Just think that everything at the end is pure energy. Then also its ironic to say that we humans have divided ourselves in so many ways! So just try to look everything the same way you look other things. A dirty pig and delicious ice cream are the same. There is nothing in nature as boy or girl, white or black, clean or dirty and etc. etc.
With the hope of a united world,
Daksh Parekh.
